The part that fails is always the drainage

A retaining wall is not holding dirt. It is holding dirt plus whatever water is in that dirt, and water is heavy. A wall built without drainage behind it takes the full hydrostatic load every time it rains, and that is what pushes walls out of plumb and cracks them.

So every wall we build gets drain rock behind it, a pipe at the base with somewhere to go, and filter fabric so the rock does not silt up in three years. It is invisible, it is a real part of the cost, and it is the difference between a wall and a future problem.

Where Perris yards need walls

Stepped tract lots. Lots of the newer development back yards in Villages of Avalon and Monument Ranch are cut into a slope, so the usable flat area is smaller than the lot. A wall buys back flat ground.

Raised beds and tree rings. Low walls that hold a planted bed above the lawn line, which also keeps the rock and mulch where it belongs.

Seat walls. Wall height at seat height around a patio. It does the retaining job and it saves buying more chairs, which is why it shows up in most outdoor living plans we draw.

Bigger grade changes. Out toward Good Hope and Mead Valley the lots are larger and the drops are bigger. Above a certain height a wall needs engineering and a permit, and we will tell you when yours crosses that line instead of quietly building it short.

Finishes and what goes with it

Standard block is the workhorse and it disappears once planting is in front of it. Stone-faced reads better where the wall is the thing you look at from the patio. Either way, wall lighting gets run while the wall is being built, because chasing wire into a finished wall is the expensive way to do it.

Walls almost never come alone. The flat ground a wall creates is what gets the turf or the pavers, so they get quoted together.

Outside Perris the wall limits change: Lake Elsinore sets them by slope, Menifee terraces anything over 48 inches, and Riverside caps a front wall at 3 feet.

Questions before you call

How tall can a retaining wall be without a permit?

It depends on the height, the surcharge above it and the jurisdiction. Above a certain height it needs engineering and a permit. We tell you at the walk-through if your wall crosses that line, before you commit.

Why do retaining walls fail?

Almost always drainage. Water behind an undrained wall is a huge load. Drain rock, a pipe with somewhere to go, and filter fabric is what prevents it.

Can you build a seat wall around my patio?

Yes, and on a stepped Perris lot it often has to be there anyway. Doing the retaining and the seating in one wall is cheaper than doing both separately.

Can you add lighting to the wall?

Yes, and the time to decide is while the wall is being built. Running wire into a finished wall costs several times more.

A great experience from this family-owned business. Janeth provided me with a complete and understandable quote, and Bolivar and his crew completed the job with speed and professionalism. The entire job, not including a couple of rain days, took less than 4 days. They removed a medium-sized tree and a bit over 1,000 sq. ft. of grass in 3 different areas, prepared all 3 areas with base material, installed weed barriers and two large mow curbs around the remaining trees, and installed top-quality artificial turf in all 3 areas. They cleaned up and hauled everything away, leaving my yard looking like a million dollars.

I wanted the lava rock that had been at the side of the house for years removed. Bolivar and Janeth gave me a few different options, and trusting their expertise I went with artificial turf in that area. He also put in drains as well. I am so happy with how it all turned out. They left everything very clean and the attention to detail is superb. I'll definitely be going to them again for the next phase.
