What makes a green roll true
A putting green is the one turf job where the base is not just about drainage. It is the shape of the putt. If the base is not shaped and compacted right, the ball wobbles, breaks where it should not, and the green becomes decoration.
- Contours. We shape breaks into the sub-grade and the base, not into the turf.
- Compaction. Under-compacted base settles unevenly and you get dead spots by year two.
- Putting surface. Short pile, dense face, sand infill brushed to the speed you want.
- Cups. Real regulation cups set flush, with flags.
- Fringe collar. A taller, different turf around the green.
Fitting a green into a Perris back yard
Most back yards here are not big enough for a straight 30-foot putt, and they do not need to be. A green with three cups at different angles gives more useful practice than one long one.
Where the yard is compact, like the newer lots in Monument Ranch and Villages of Avalon, we wrap the green with turf lawn and use pavers for the walk-on, so the yard reads as one design instead of a golf feature parked in the corner.
